Make Your Own Poles

Tipi poles should be straight and free of faults.  They should be cut and  peeled while green, and dried before use.  The pole sizes on the following chart are optimal.  Poles slightly shorter, or with slightly larger butt sizes may be used.

Poles should be peeled with a draw knife or similar tool.

Lodgepole Pine is the best species, but Douglas Fir may be substituted. Western Red Cedar can make an excellent pole, but it can be difficult to find.

Tipi poles are found in very dense growths. When trees grow very close together they tend to grow tall, thin, and straight, with few lower branches.

When cutting poles to length, cut the top to the size desired, then measure down the pole for length.  Top size is more important than butt size.
